Uttarabhadrapada – The Back Legs of the Deathbed
Uttarabhadrapada (3.20-16.40 Pisces) is governed by Ahir Budhnya, who stands for the serpent of the atmosphere’s underbelly. It is hence signified as a Warrior Constellation and grants prosperity to the cosmos.
Uttarabhadrapada lies in the twin constellations of Pegasus and Andromeda. It can be translated into ‘someone with lucky feet’ or ‘someone possessing the feet of a stool or Uttarprosthapada.
The symbolism of Uttarabhadrapada stems from the fact that it is extremely unpredictable and can conveniently metamorphose itself according to the demands of the situation. Hence, Uttarabhadrapada resists being identified with archetypes. Ti is difficult to pin down the inherent motivations of this nakshatra as it is a storehouse for various energies, expressions and natures. Apparently flexible, Uttarabhadrapada is determined to accomplish its set goals which are alleviated by the imagery of the wise old man.
Uttarabhadrapada is often characterized by postponement, and at the same time laziness, and physical and emotional indolence. Like the indigenous native tribes, the wisdom of Uttarabhadrapada is acquired through experience, and not knowledge. Calculation marks the apparent restraint of the natives with benevolent intentions, understanding and sympathy. As the arbiter, they are able to quash out fire. Calculation makes them good with numerology, astrology, divination, yoga etc. The disposition of Uttarabhadrapada is a serene one that remains unaffected in times of trouble.
The position of Saturn goes a long way in effecting the performance of the Uttarabhadrapada natives. Hence, the serpent of the atmosphere’s underbelly often lies dormant. The latent inertia is overcome by the influence of complementing planets like Mars, Jupiter and the Sun. However, the wrath of Uttarabhadrapada is controlled and sublime and therefore even when it is at its worst, it is less depriving or cruel by nature. Characterized by reason and logic, Uttarabhadrapada ensures that the verdict is best for all the parties involved.
It might be mentioned here that this nakshatra refers to the vana prastha stage of human life, which involves severance from all worldly and material ties. The aspects ruling this stage are secretiveness, reclusion, and respite from worldly duties. Uttarabhadrapada is hence associated with “varshodyamana shakti” which indicates the power to bring rainfall. This hence relates to the all-encompassing capacity of the asterism and the cosmic sea of conscience and consciousness.
Padas or Quarters
The first pada falls on the Leo
Navamsa which is ruled by the Sun. Natives are proud, illuminating, and active
and goal oriented. Like the sun at dawn or dusk, the pada spreads the light of
its experience around.
The second pada falls on the Virgo
Navamsa which is ruled by Mercury. Planning, calculative and analytical, the
quarter finds wisdom in the small things, staying more at the back than revealing
The third pada falls on the Libra
Navamsa which is ruled by Venus. Passive and balanced, the planets here look for
objectivity, although too much of passivity can make them lack the energy to
let their works be known.
The fourth pada falls on the
Scorpio Navamsa which is ruled by Mars. It is hidden, occult and mysterious,
letting the native go to extremes of wisdom or confusion. The person can externalize
their energy aggressively. The intensity can get to amazing heights and affect
any area that the planets influence.

Uttarabhadrapada natives should worship Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu or the Goddess Durga, and chant the root mantra “Om Sham” and “Om Sam” 108 times during the lunar transition of this nakshatra to alleviate afflictions. Wearing psychedelic colors is also recommended. All important actions should correspond to the course of this constellation for best results.
In the words of Varahamihira, the lunar influence gives Ashwini pleasant appearance, virtue and good communication prowess. Rabindranath Tagore is a typical Uttarabhadrapada native.
