Legendary Significance

Legend has it that the ancient Egyptians placed pieces of the stone coral on the tombs of the dead to ward off evil spirits, since owing to its coloration, it was believed to contain heavenly blood. In Greek mythology, when the head of the Gorgon Medusa was slain by Perseus, a few drops of its blood was scattered on the sea which thereby consolidated to form coral. The Iranian prophet and religious founder Zoroaster looked upon coral as a protection against magic and physical ailments, which was later on evidenced by Paraclesus in the 16^th century.
